Needs for assistance in technological development of the SMEs
The survey was developed and organized by GIS and BARDA. It was held during the following period: 1 – 30 April 2001. It was decided that a strict sample methodology should be avoided since:
- The objective was initial feedback form the SME sector as a base for preparation of future actions
- This would allow shorter period for completion of the survey
The total number of the companies included in the survey is 154. The SMEs were sampled on regional basis in the following regions: Blagoevgrad, Varna, Vidin, Vratza, Dobrich, Kardjali, Kustendil, Haskovo, Plovdiv, Pleven, Razlog, Stara Zagora, Silistra, Samokov, Smolyan. Within each region, the relevant BARDA Agency took decisions on the selection of the interviewed companies.
The objectives of the questionnaire bellow was to identify at initial stage:
- SMEs that need TA in R&D activities
- Recognition of needs for technological development within various industries/regions
- Industries with low and high innovation culture
- Utilized R&D budget across various industries/regions
- Available R&D staff across various industries/regions
- Popular lines for financing R&D activities
On the basis of filled questionnaires GIS selected 47 companies that were offered technical assistance on-site. 20 of them confirm their commitment to co-operate external experts to assist them to overcome technological holdbacks.
