The region of Lovech lies in the central part of Bulgaria. Two thirds of its territory are hilly and mountains. From an administrative point of view the region is divided into 8 municipalities. Their centersbeing the cities Lovech, Troyan, Teteven, Loukovit, Yablanitsa, Letnitsa, Ugarchin and Apriltsi.

Nature has been extremely generous to this region that is cross point of the Balkan range and the Danubian plain. In the region there 8 preservation areas and protected territories. There lies the bigger part of the enormous national park "Tsentralen Balkan" (Central Balkan Range), and the preserves "Steneto", "Boatin" and "Tsarichina" are UNESCO monuments.

The Lovech region is one of the territories most ardently keeping the national tradition. Of interest for the Bulgarian and foreign tourists are the one and only in Bulgaria Museum of Traditional Arts, as well as the unique national Fair of Arts and Crafts in the village Oreshak, the Lovech Historical Museum and the Levski Museum. Among the 684 monuments of culture are the Troyan and the Glozhene Monasteries, the architectural preservation area "Varosha" in Lovech (one of the biggest and most carefully preserved in Bulgaria), the magnificent " Pokritia most " (the Covered Bridge ), over the river Ossam, the unique in Balkans, designed by the mason master Kolyo Ficheto. The rivers and the dam lakes are wonderful resting spots.

The fascinating charm of the mountains could be felt if you visit the 10 mountain hostels. You could regain your health in Shipkovo, Chiflic and Krushouna where there thermal springs, or else in the mountain resorts Ribaritsa, Cherni Ossam, Apriltsi and Beklemeto.

General information

The region of Lovech spreads out along the hilly banks of the Iskar, Ossam and Vit river and among the northern spurs of the Central Balkan Mountains, enjoys a moderate continental climate in a mountainous setting. The average annual temperature is 10C. The winter is cold. The summer is relatively warm. The rainfall is above the average in this country reaching its minimum in June. The snow cover holds for about 110 days. The region abounds in rare plant and animal species, which cannot be seen anywhere else in Europe.

It provides great opportunities for hiking, hunting, tennis, swimming, mountaineering, skiing, mountain bike, country tourism and aquatic sports clubs.

Crafts

Sinse its emergense Lovech, Troyan, Teteven and village around them have been e centre of Bulgarian crafts. Traditional crafts in this part of Bulgaria include woodcarving, coppersmith's trade, wooden flute making, cowbell making, bread and candy making, herb gathering, cutlery, weaving, whittling, woolen braid weaving, furriery, wood-working and turnery, pottery making, wooden bowls and low wooden tables, harness making, jewelry etc.

Nature and Touristic Landmarks

Statistics Information

Lovech region is situated in Central North Bulgaria on a territory of 4 132 sq. km which is 3,7 % of the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. It comprises of 8 municipalities, 150 residential areas and 47 mayor offices. At the end of the 2000 the number of the population in Lovech district is 171 236 which is 2,15 % of the population of the Republic of Bulgaria. The average density of the population is 43,15 % people per sq. km and the same indicator for Bulgaria is 74,2 %.

The number of families are 68 625.

The average number of the employed in 2000 is 38 321 where 14 972 work in the public and 24 349 in the private sector.

The private companies have secured 90 % of the sales income, while the rest is received by state - owned, municipality -owned and co-operative companies

Almost 2/3 of the territory of the district is a mountain area while the other part is hilly and a comparatively small part is plain.

The state road network on the territory of the region includes roads with a total length of 1333 km, which is divided per class as follows:
І class roads - 105 km
ІІ class roads - 78 km
ІІІ class roads - 547 km
Local roads - 603 km

The average annual temperature is 10C.

The cultivatable land in Lovech district has been 1 511 086 dk in total. 99,1 % of it is cultivated in the private farms. The largest share is that of the fields - 71,3 %.

There is 1 581 090 dk of forests in the district, witch is 40 % of the total territory compared to the average figure for the country - 33 % .the largest is the share of the oak woods /50 %/. The bigger part of the forest areas are in Apriltsi, Troyan and Teteven municipality areas.
